Most nationalities can get an e-Visa online — apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before arrival.

  • Types: e-Tourist (30 days, 1 yr, 5 yr), e-Business, e-Medical.
  • Carry a printed copy of the approved ETA.
  • Have a return/onward ticket & passport valid 6+ months.
⚠️ Apply only on the official .gov.in site — many look-alike sites overcharge.
  • eSIM (easiest): buy before you fly — Airalo, Holafly, Jio eSIM — active the moment you land.
  • Local SIM: Jio or Airtel at the airport; bring passport + visa + a photo. Activation can take a few hours.
  • Coverage is excellent in cities; patchy in mountains/remote areas — download offline maps.
  • India runs on UPI & cards — most places accept them. Carry some cash (₹) for autos, tea stalls & small towns.
  • ATMs are everywhere; tell your bank you're travelling to avoid blocks.
  • Exchange money only at banks/authorised counters — never on the street.
  • Tipping ~10% at restaurants; ₹20–50 for porters/drivers is kind.

  • Use app cabs (Ola/Uber/Rapido) — fixed fares, tracked rides — especially at night.
  • Solo & female travellers: dress modestly at religious sites, share your live trip with someone, trust your instincts.
  • Keep digital + printed copies of your passport, visa & insurance.

  • Street autos: insist on the meter or agree the fare before getting in.
  • Trains: book early via IRCTC — foreign tourists can use the Foreign Tourist Quota. (Search trains right inside Tripo Saints.)
  • Prepaid taxi counters at airports/stations are a safe default.

  • Drink bottled/filtered water only; skip ice unless you trust the source.
  • Eat at busy stalls with high turnover — freshly cooked & hot is safest.
  • Carry basics: ORS, anti-diarrhoeal, paracetamol, hand sanitiser, sunscreen.
  • Ask your doctor about Hepatitis A, Typhoid & routine vaccines. Get travel insurance.
  • Pharmacies (“chemists”) are widespread & inexpensive.

Some regions need a permit before you travel. ILP = Inner Line Permit (mainly Indian nationals); PAP/RAP = Protected/Restricted Area Permit (foreign nationals).

Everyone needs a permit. Indians: e-ILP online. Foreigners: PAP (often via a registered tour operator / FRRO).

⚠️ Rules & links change often. Foreign nationals should confirm with the FRRO or a registered tour operator before booking.
  • Oct–Mar: the sweet spot for most of India — cool & dry.
  • Apr–Jun: hot in the plains; head to the Himalayas/hill stations.
  • Jun–Sep: monsoon — lush but wet; great for Kerala & the Western Ghats, tricky for trekking.
  • Each destination in Tripo Saints shows its best season.
  • Remove shoes before entering temples & homes; dress modestly at religious sites (cover shoulders/knees).
  • Use your right hand for eating, giving & receiving.
  • Ask before photographing people or ceremonies.
  • A smile and “namaste” go a long way. Bargaining is normal in markets, not in shops with fixed prices.
